Winchester teachers out ‘sick’ to protest failed funding plan

Winchester teachers called in “sick” on Nov. 30, just a few days after Town Meeting members voted 79 to 67 against appropriating $191,250 to fund the educators’ contract.

According to the state’s Strike Investigation report, a Winchester Education Association representative told the School Committee, “The teachers felt that they had to make a statement because they felt that they have been insulted by the Town Meeting vote.”

The Massachusetts Labor Relations Commission deemed this action to be an unlawful work stoppage and issued a “cease and desist” order to the WEA.

The goal of this site is to share historical information about educator strikes as an important part of Massachusetts’ labor history.
