Waltham strike caps months of actions

As in virtually all strikes, a one-day strike in Waltham in 1983 followed months of activities designed to focus attention on the members’ concerns. Salaries were a major issue. The Waltham Educators Association contended that the district’s starting salary of $10,747 put the district at a competitive disadvantage in a state where the average starting salary was $12,000 at that time.

Other issues discussed in 20 months of negotiations were early retirement, recall language, career exploration leave and sick leave for classroom aides.

During the one-day strike on Nov. 4, teachers picketed at all the schools, held a demonstration at city hall and marched in front of the mayor’s home.

The strike ended after a fact-finding session was scheduled for Nov. 16.

The goal of this site is to share historical information about educator strikes as an important part of Massachusetts’ labor history.
