History of Educator Strikes by MTA Locals

Shrewsbury

January 18 - 19, 2000

195 Shrewsbury teachers out ‘sick’ for a day in 2000

Negotiations in Shrewsbury were not progressing by the time the contract expired at the end of August 1999. One month later, the association created a crisis team and stepped up its organizing. Still, the contract was not settled by the winter break.

On Jan. 18, 175 out of 365 teachers called in sick. The district reported that the usual absentee rate for teachers due to illness was 15 to 20. The Massachusetts Labor Relations Commission held that this action was a strike.

The goal of this site is to share historical information about educator strikes as an important part of Massachusetts’ labor history.
