Frustration boils over in Revere

We have pointed out to the mayor and the School Committee that more than $400,000 is available in the current school salary account. It is available because more than 30 names of teachers are listed, despite the fact that they are either deceased, on leave of absence, or retired.
The Revere Teachers Association was one of 10 MTA locals whose members went on strike in 1987. MTA Today reported that the “common link” in the strikes was frustration, with teachers feeling thwarted in their efforts to improve salaries, benefits and working conditions.
In Revere, teachers were upset by the offer of a $375 cost-of-living increase for the 1987-88 school year, which amounted to $1.98 a day. RTA President Richard Champa addressed the members, saying, “Last night, the School Committee suggested we take back their offer for a vote. Is it acceptable?”
“NO!” roared the RTA members, according to MTA Today.
Revere teachers were out for three days before reaching a tentative agreement on Sept. 13. The agreement included salary increases of 5 and 7 percent, higher longevity payments, guaranteed elementary preparation time, just-cause protections and other benefits.
