Northeast Regional teachers protest with sick-out

Negotiations between the School Committee and the Northeast Metropolitan Regional Vocational High School were stalled in the fall of 1986. On Oct. 1, 83 of 127 school employees called in sick and 44 staff members who did report to work wrote that “their presence at work should not be construed as approval of the School Committee’s conduct in the contract negotiations.”

The Massachusetts Labor Relations Commission determined that this sick-out was a strike. (13 MLC 1216)

The goal of this site is to share historical information about educator strikes as an important part of Massachusetts’ labor history.
